RCIA Sponsor and Team Member

A Journey of Faith

RCIA is a year-round process by which adults develop their faith in Jesus and eventually enter the Catholic Church. RCIA also offers adult Catholics an opportunity to enrich their faith journeys by being a sponsor or working with the RCIA core team.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (sometimes shortened to “RCIA”) is the process by which adults develop their faith in Jesus, learn about the Catholic faith and eventually become incorporated into the Body of Christ, the Church. At St. Thomas More Church, one can begin the process at any time simply by contacting the Church office or calling us at (512) 258-1161.

A fully initiated member of St. Thomas More represents the parish as a sponsor for a catechumen (someone who is yet to be baptized) or a candidate (someone already baptized in a Christian church). Sponsors come from all walks of life, ethnicities, and incomes. They are not Church experts. They share just one characteristic: a willingness to share themselves and their faith so that others can enter fully in the daily life of our St. Thomas More Catholic Community.

Sponsors have four responsibilities:

To serve as the personal representative of the Church for the catechumen or candidate.
To serve as a witness for the catechumen or candidate.
To serve as a companion, a guide, a good friend.
To serve as a realistic model of what being a Catholic Christian is all about.

Sponsors are encouraged to use the RCIA experience to renew their own continuing conversion. They often feel challenged and use this time to examine their own beliefs and behaviors. Sponsors frequently find themselves answering God’s call to conversion actively with their catechumen or candidate. The time commitment for sponsors is 1-1/2 to 3 hours per week for a few months or up to a year, depending on the faith formation of the individual they are sponsoring.
